Essential Tips for a Smooth Moving Experience
/ 5 min read
Last Updated:Hey there! Over the last five years, we’ve become quite the moving experts—this last move was our third in five years (with kids and pets in tow!). In this post, I’m going to share all my tips on how to pack, move efficiently, and quickly settle into your new place. Plus, I’ll spill some secrets on saving money and keeping your kids happy during the move. And let’s not forget the importance of the right packing supplies, especially if you’re tackling it all yourself!
Packing Tips For Moving
We decided to pack our own boxes because we wanted to declutter and donate as we went. Sure, hiring movers to do it all is convenient, but if you’re like us, trying to lighten the load, DIY could be the way to go. We saved a ton on moving costs and managed to give away a lot of stuff instead of hauling it and donating later. Here are my DIY packing tips:
-
Get matching boxes. It might be tempting to use all those Amazon boxes or grab some from the grocery store. But trust me, it’s worth getting uniform-sized boxes. We used mostly medium boxes with handles and banker’s boxes (no tape needed for these!). Banker’s boxes are perfect for books and heavy items.
-
Use clothing bags for soft items. Plastic storage bags are fantastic for clothing, bed linens, pillows, and even toys. They hold more than boxes and work great as extra padding in your moving container.
-
Label everything. Even if it seems random, label it! You’ll thank yourself later when you’re looking for something specific. Color-coded labels are a lifesaver.
-
Declutter as you pack. One of the perks of packing yourself is the chance to declutter. If you don’t use it, love it, or it’s out of style, donate it. The Marie Kondo “Does it spark joy?” method works wonders.
Booking a Moving Service
After a friend had a moving horror story, we chose a POD instead of a moving broker or full-service company. We’d used PODs before and felt comfortable with the process. The best part? You don’t have to drive the POD. Pack it up, lock it, and let it travel while you drive (or fly) to your new home.
Here’s how our POD experience went: We scheduled our POD to arrive about a week before our move-out date in Tennessee. It sat in our driveway for a week, giving us plenty of time to pack. You can pack it yourself or hire local movers for heavy items. We did a bit of both. My husband packed most of the boxes while a moving crew helped with heavy furniture. We used every inch of the POD and even ended up donating what we couldn’t fit.
Why We Like PODS
- Affordable: We saved a lot compared to full-service movers. Our move cost under $4,000.
- Time to Pack: You get up to a week to pack, so no rushing.
- Simple and Straightforward: Easy to use and transparent about costs.
Cons of PODS
- Potential for Damage: Be really careful packing. Assume your belongings will have a bumpy ride and pack accordingly.
- Uncertainty of Arrival: You get a delivery window rather than an exact date. Be ready to live without your stuff for a bit longer if needed.
For valuable items (like electronics) and plants, keep them with you in the car instead of the POD.
Moving Tips and Hacks
-
Pack a “comfort box” for each family member, including pets. These should include favorite blankets, snacks, toiletries, and maybe a favorite candle or toy.
-
Have a box for super important items. Think passports, essential bills, and anything you can’t afford to lose.
-
Fill boxes fully. Use towels, clothes, or even toilet paper rolls to fill gaps.
-
Move clothing on hangers. Bundle clothes on hangers under unscented trash bags. It saves so much time.
-
Choose uniform boxes with handles. They’re easier to stack and carry.
-
Label necessary items clearly. Mark boxes with everyday essentials, like toiletries and kitchen items, so you can find them quickly.
Note: If you feel guilty about buying moving supplies, remember—you can pass them along or reuse them. Uniform boxes and bags make everything easier.
Get Organized Before You Move
Before moving day, make sure to:
- Schedule utilities and services for your new home.
- Arrange a stop date for services at your old place.
- Forward your mail with USPS and update your address for subscriptions and important accounts.
- Schedule a grocery delivery for move-in day.
Best Moving Boxes and Packing Supplies
Stock up on these essentials:
-
Medium boxes with handle holes. Perfect for most of your items.
-
Banker’s boxes. Great for books and files, no tape needed.
-
Clothing bags. Ideal for clothes, linens, and even holiday decor.
-
Moving labels. Color-coded to keep everything organized.
-
Safer box cutter. Handy and safer than a metal razor blade.
Tips for Moving Cross Country
-
Plan carefully. Space is limited, so pack wisely. Start early and prioritize.
-
Sell, donate, and declutter. Only take what you’ll need and enjoy.
-
Ship essentials to yourself. We sent air mattresses and cleaning supplies ahead of time.
-
Create comforts. Small touches like favorite snacks and a clean house can go a long way.
Tips for Moving with Children and Pets
Moving is tough for kids. Here are some tips:
-
Allow space for emotions. It’s okay for them to feel sad.
-
Create excitement. Let them pick out new items for their rooms and talk about the good things coming.
-
Do fun activities. Keep them engaged and excited with new adventures right away.
For pets, consistency is key. Give them extra treats and a cozy spot from day one.
