How to Hang Curtains the Right Way (and Save Money!)

Curtains that are hung correctly

Hey friends! Hanging curtains might seem straightforward, but it’s super easy to get it wrong. I learned this the hard way. In my first home, I spent what felt like a fortune on curtains, only to realize too late that they were all wrong. They were too small, too short, and honestly, just looked terrible. I didn’t have the budget to replace them, so I lived with them until the day I moved out. I’m here to make sure this doesn’t happen to you!

In this post, I’ll walk you through how to hang curtains the right way. Trust me, it’s easy and will totally transform your space by making your windows look bigger. Plus, I’ll share some insider tips for finding beautiful, affordable curtains. You can save so much money with just a few tricks!

What’s the Right Way to Hang Curtains?

A general rule to follow when hanging curtains is to go wide and high. Place your curtain rod on the wall between your window’s molding and the ceiling trim.

Here’s a sketch to show how hanging curtains wider and higher can totally change the look of your room. Your windows will appear way larger!

Where Should I Shop For Curtains?

It’s tempting to run to Target, but often the curtains there are too short and will make your windows look smaller. Plus, it can be difficult to find exactly what you need in a store. That’s why I usually buy my curtains online.

For a splurge, I love West Elm and Anthropologie. If you’re on a budget, Amazon and IKEA have some great options.
