The holiday season is hands down my favorite time of year—the glitter, lights, and garlands just make everything so magical. But, let’s be real, the house always feels a bit drab once all the festive decorations come down.
Usually, I just toss everything into a big tub and call it a day. However, this year I added a bunch more to my Christmas collection, so it’s high time I get a bit more organized with storing my decorations.
How to Store Ornaments
For ornaments, using segmented storage is a game-changer. These compartments keep each one separate and safe during storage.
Regular-sized ornaments fit perfectly in a container like this, and this size works great for larger ones. You can even put multiple smaller ornaments in one segment—just make sure to wrap fragile ones in paper or bubble wrap.
Already have boxes you love? You can buy cardboard dividers and customize the compartments to fit your needs.
Keep Everything Organized With Labels
Labels are a lifesaver! I use this label maker all around the house—in the kitchen, bathroom, office, and storage room. Slap a label on your boxes, containers, or tubs, and finding your decor next year will be a breeze.
Trust me, you’ll use the label maker for all sorts of things (think photo books and scrapbooking).
Use Wreath and Garland Bags
My wreaths always ended up getting squished in storage, coming out oval-shaped. A wreath bag, like this one, keeps them nice and round. Plus, you can store garlands in there too—just wind them around the outside edge of the wreath, and fill the middle with lightweight tinsel garlands.
Be sure to place this on the top shelf to avoid any squishing!
Open Storage Options
Segmented containers and specific shape bags are super handy, but don’t underestimate the power of a basic sturdy box. My collection of porcelain tea light houses fits perfectly in a strong box with a bit of bubble wrap.
You can also use larger boxes with removable trays and storage pockets.
Put Items Back in The Original Packaging
This one requires a bit of foresight, but storing items in their original packaging is fantastic! Lights, ornaments, garlands, and even artificial trees fit perfectly back into their original boxes, which are often designed to be sturdy enough for shipping and store movement.
Keep those boxes—they make ideal storage containers and won’t take up more space than necessary.
Use Clear Storage Bags and Bins
I’ve saved a bunch of clear packaging bags from other items, and they’re great for storing soft garlands and other non-fragile decor. Clear boxes are also an excellent choice since you can easily see what’s inside and use them year after year.
How to Store Your Tree
Using the original box for your tree is the best, but if you’ve already recycled it, a tree bag will work wonders. These are often roomy enough to fit more than one tree, so you can store your main tree and any smaller ones together. Bonus: you don’t even have to take the tree apart!
Color Coordinate Your Storage
This one’s optional but super fun—color-coordinating your storage can make it look amazing and easy to find all your holiday decor. Pick a color you like or get all your items from the same brand for a unified look.
So, there you have it! Tons of ways to keep your holiday decor organized. They even have storage bags for wrapping paper and boxes that protect figurines.
Tip: Take a picture of each box as you unpack it at the start of the season. This makes it easy to remember where everything goes when it’s time to pack it all down again.
Happy organizing! Here’s to looking forward to next holiday season! xo, Laura
